Personal Narrative
My name is Milan Hendrickson and I'm a sophomore at Redwood. I love writing feature and news stories and hope to write more sports stories in the future! I am a competitive beach volleyball player and I dream to go D1. I enjoy spending time outdoors whether thats hiking, going to the beach, or walking my dog. I also love spending time with my friends and family as I'd say I'm a big extrovert. The main reason why I joined Journalism is because I've always had a passion for writing. I've enjoyed every writing class I've taken and I knew I would love to be apart of Bark. I was intrigued because before joining Journalism, I didn't have any experience on writing stories for a newspaper and didn't know how to but, I was excited to learn how and develop the skills to do so.
Journalism has taught me how to write quick 24 hour stories, but also how to write stories that go on for weeks. With it being mostly a student run program, it has taught me how to advocate for myself and stories that I want to pursue. I have learned communication skills that I never had before since so much of the class is collaborating with your classmates. I've been apart of powerful discussions in class that have given me a perspective and a sense of belonging. Being the middle child in my family, I often feel like my voice isn't heard but in Journalism I feel the opposite. My voice feels just as important as anyone else's and I'm never afraid to express my opinion because of the safe environment we've built as a class. Ive learned so much more than I ever thought I would've, and being in Journalism has been the highlight of my year.
